The 1930 U.S. Census for Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri lists John W. Barnby as a switchman on the railroad. His 2nd wife Katherine operated a beauty shop. My dad had said that John Walter had worked on the Panama Canal in his earlier years. When my dad was a young child, John Walter gave him a pocket watch that he treasured. John Walter and Elsie had one daughter named Elsie. Elsie was raised by her Barnby grandparents, William and Lucy. John Walter's wife had died when their daughter was very young.
