Julius Spate McCoin was the son of Rev. William McKaughan (McCoin), a traveling preacher, and Elizabeth (Piggot) McCaughan (McCoin); husband of Sarah Frances (Osborn) McCoin who died in 1888 at the age of 33 leaving him with 4 children - Numa F. McCoin, Clara Minnie McCoin, Ella Jane McCoin, and Walter H. McCoin. Infant daughter Ida McCoin had died 3 years before her mother.

Julius was a "freighter" in Oregon. McCoin Orchard near Gray Butte, Jefferson County, Oregon is on part of the homestead of Julius & Sarah McCoin. It is now owned by the U.S. Forest Service.
