In early life he resided in Guilford, CT and was a sea captain. He married 8 Jan 1755 at Middletown, CT to Elizabeth Starr. Daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Jarcie) Starr. He removed to Middletown where all of his children were born and where he spent the remainder of his life. He dwelt on st, and his house and garden occupied part of the present site of the Wesleyan University. In 1777, July 1, he was appointed issuing Commissary to the battallions raised in Connecticut for Continental service. Subsequently, he kept an Inn and at one time had charge of the jail. He is described as a man of warm and genial disposition. A great reader and a cultivator of fine fruit. His house was a favorite for the young. He outlived all his 12 brothers and sisters.
