Bartley was born in Lauderdale Co, MS to Bartley G. and Sarah Sophronia Alexander Gilcrease. He was reared in Louisiana. The family was in Winn Parish, LA by 1860. In 1862 when he was 18, Bartley enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a Private in the cavalry. During a battle fought in Louisiana, he met his future wife Mary Elizabeth Terrell Bean. Mr. Bean died during the time he was fighting for the C.S.A. Bartley was captured and his horse taken. He escaped and became a foot soldier. His older brother, Private Eli J. Gilcrease, age 20, was a wagoneer in the C.S.A. Eli was born in 1842 and died in 1917 in Louisiana. In 1865, Bartley's regiment of soldiers was ordered to surrender. They were later pardoned and paroled. Bartley returned to see Elizabeth Bean and married her. The young widow had two living children, Her daughter, Louisiana "Lally" Bean, died during a battle which was fought in Elizabeth's yard. The living children were a daughter, Martha Ann Bean (Self) and son, James Asbury Bean. James is buried near Bartley and Elizabeth in Garden of Memories. Bartley and Elizabeth had the following children: Delia, Henry, William, Frances, twins Lavinia & Lutullus, Addie, Jane, and Emma.
