A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Rudy Lee "R.L." Gilliam, Jr., and the daughter of Elisha Simmons and Martha Rice Simmons, both deceased. She was a homemaker and was a member of Union Ridge Church. At Union Ridge, she was a member of the Ella Fleming Sunday School Class, the Golden Agers, and was a former nursery worker and vacation bible school volunteer. Mrs. Gilliam was also a member of the Alamance County Extension Homemakers.

Survivors include her three children, Susan G. Burge (Steve), Cathy G. Bullard (Tommy) and Rev. Kevin Gilliam (Kathy); six grandchildren, Perry Bullard (Catherine), Charles Bullard, Stephanie Hollowell (Dr. Robert), Leeanne Walker (Dr. David), Kimberly Guley (Kevin), and Barbara Ann Sexton (Jamie); nine great-grandchildren; and her sister, Grace Shambley.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters and 11 brothers.
