Minnie Barnes passed away in her home Friday, April 24, 2020. Minnie was born March 12, 1942 to parents Nellie Carterby Jefferson and Nicholas Jefferson. Minnie was a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. She is survived by her husband, Jim Barnes, daughter Cheryl Coon, daughter and son-in-law Julie Barnes Points and Joe Points, son and daughter-in-law Randy and Rhonda Barnes, sister Rhonda Sullivan and her brother and sisters-in-law Harold and Judy Barnes, Janet and Tom Bolend, Brenda Jennings and John Cookinham, and Wanda and John Stratton.

Minnie was born and raised in Smithville, Oklahoma. She attended Wheelock Academy for Girls and Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. After school, she made Kansas City her home.

Minnie and Jim were married for 50 years. Minnie loved being a mon to her daughters and sons. She and Jim rounded them all up each weekend for camping and boating trips to regional lakes. Nearing retirement, she and Jim bought a house in the Truman Lake area and began their weekend family adventures until it became their permanent home. Minnie had an infectious laugh and a welcoming smile. She made friends easily.

Minnie, Jim and the family spent free time on road trips seeing the countryside, coast to coast. Favorite trips with her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law included Lake Powell, Branson and Colorado. Minnie and Jim loved and cared for many homeless animals that became beloved family pets. She enjoyed singing along with George Strait and Elvis Presley and talking Kansas City Royals baseball and Kansas City Chiefs football with her family.

Hanging out with her mom and dad, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews were the highlights of her trips to Smithville where she was known as Aunt Fay or Fay. Being involved in their lives through cards and phone calls was special to her. She enjoyed singing her native Choctaw language with her mom, dad and lots of family members. She never forgot her native language because she often talked and practiced with her nephew David Jefferson, Jr.

Minnie and Jim have five grandchildren; Brad, Steven, Kevin, Jamie and LeAnne, who she loved so much. Visits resulted in good times and lots of laughter together. Any time spent with the eleven great grandchildren always made her happy. She is also survived and loved by 25 nieces and nephews and 43 great nieces and nephews.

Family preceding her death include; her sons, Dennis Barnes and Duane Barnes, brothers Raphael Jefferson, Lee Jefferson, David Jefferson, sister Minnie Edwards, niece Lisa Cartby, niece Janice Shell Davis and sister-in-law Donna Shell.

Arrangements for her cremation are under the direction of Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, Missouri.
