Horace Robinson Batts of Beulaville, North Carolina died peacefully at home on April 24, 2020. A son of the late Wayne Batts and Rosa Carter, he was born December 11, 1933 in the Wallace area. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-five years, Wilma Jarmon Batts. Mr. Batts is survived by his children Thomas W. Batts of Beulaville, Gregory W. Batts of Barnesville, Ohio and his wife Kathy, Gary W. Batts of North Charleston, South Carolina, and Terri Batts Miley of Richland, Washington and her husband Harry; grandchildren Chrystie Batts Sticht, Jennifer Batts Rice, Michael Batts, Joey Batts, Sarah Miley Shaff, and Charlotte Miley Richter; and by eleven great-grandchildren. Mr. Batts is also survived by his sisters Carolyn Price of Holly Ridge, Gloria Raynor of Fountaintown, Patricia Mobley of Holly Ridge, and brother Royce Batts of Raleigh. He was a member of Bethel Wesleyan Church of Rose Hill. Horace Batts was proud to wear the U.S. Army uniform for 42 years, 20 years active duty and 22 years as a JROTC instructor at Goose Creek High School in Goose Creek, South Carolina. He began his Army career in tactical communications and retired from active duty in May 1972 as 1st Sergeant with the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 37th Field Artillery stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. His assignments included five years as an ROTC instructor at Pennsylvania State University and duty stations in Korea, Germany, and the Panama Canal Zone. He served two tours in Vietnam and received three Bronze Stars for meritorious service in a combat zone. He also received two Army Commendation Medals for meritorious service. A private graveside service will be held. The family requests that contributions be considered to Bethel Wesleyan Church of Rose Hill or to a charity of choice. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to our care team members representing Vidant Home Health and Hospice.
