Roy L. Merrill, 84, of Astoria, IL died Aug. 13, 2007, at his home.

He was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Vermont, a son of Earl Preston and Naomi Ellen Hart Merrill. He married Nina Hendricks on Sept. 20, 1947, in Quincy. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Norma (and John R.) Onion and Cindy (and Danny) Weaver, both of Astoria; and one son, Thomas (and Pamela) Merrill of Browning.

He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Merrill; two brothers, Lloyd and Paul Merrill; and four sisters, Helen Danner, Mabel Mendenhall, Nelda Day and Marjorie Nielsen.

He was in the United States Navy, serving two years.

He was a coal miner, working for Amax Coal Co. in the Vermont area and Freeman United Coal Co. in Canton.

He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

Graveside services will be held at Astoria Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Astoria American Legion Post #25.
