It is claimed that he was born on Buffington's Island in the Ohio River across from Mason Co., VA which is now Jackson County, WV. Note: WV became a state in 1863. The counties changed many times as well.
Another source claims he was born in Hampshire county, VA. This county seems more likely because his immediately younger and older siblings were claimed also to be born in Hampshire county as well. Also in 1776 the family had not bought the island yet.
His middle name may have been Xonophon because his son Phillip named one of his sons Joseph Xonophon Buffington. However the FAG memorial for this person claims the middle name is Xavier. I have been unable to find any document with a complete name of those with an X for their middle initial.
So confusion is evident.

In order for his birthday to be 13 Jun 1776, the inscription would need to be 72Ys 7Ms 6Ds. This calculation method uses accurate day counts for each month.
Or... it is possible that at the time of his death the undertaker used the "30 day month method." Using that method every month is claimed to have 30 days and his birthdate calculates to be 16 Aug 1776 which is a value seen in many ancestry.com family trees.
