Below is a story written by Myrtle Bowles Crabtree about her parents
David Franklin Bowles born August 21, 1851 at Carrol County MO.. His parents were Stephen Decatur Bowles and Frances Emily Judy Bowles. He had three sisters. His mother died when he was but 10 years old.
He was six feet tall, lanky with beautiful blue eyes and red hair.
He loved people and in his younger days was quite a rambler. I remember him telling of climbing Pike's Peak before there was a trail. He was a great worker and it was his delight to pitch more hay, more grain to the threshing machine or shuck more corn than anyone that he could get into a contest. He loved to play horse shoes on Sunday afternoon and many the time that the neighbors gathered for a about.he was honest but quick tempered. Although his education was limited to a small amount of schooling he was able to converse with the best of them. Many times during a long winter my mother read books aloud to him and we children.
My greatest embarrassments was when he came to school to get us and I had to ride double with him on a mule while my brothers rode the horse.
We were always poor, making our living out of the Kansas soil. We always had something for Christmas, usually he would find a beautiful cedar for our tree. It was sometimes just candy and an orange but usually one gift. I remember one time my gift was a beautiful red ribbon sash.
My parents moved many times. My father liked to trade. Before I was born they came by covered wagon from Dickinson Co. to Franklin Co.
He told me he saw Custer ride out of Ft. Riley when he went on the last trip to fight the Indians. he talked much about the James Boys who were grown boys in the school where he first went.
He suffered a stoke in about 1919 and although never fully recovered, he worked plowing corn, cutting wood and other jobs on the farm.
He loved for my husband (Albert Crabtree) to sing Kitty Wells and Brooklin Theater.
He passed away in 1924 a short time before his 73rd birthday and his resting place is the beautiful Quaker Cemetery at Spring Grove church between Lane and Osawatome Kansas.
Oh, yes he accepted Christ in Dickinson Co. and was baptized in the Christian Church.
At the time of his death he was a member of the Spring Grove (a country church) Quaker or Friend Denomination.
