Louis was born into the family of A. Hurley and Miranda A. Dupree. He was the baby of 6 children. His mother passed away just 3 days after his 14 th birthday. As time would go on his dad and all of his brothers and sisters, as well as their spouses, passed away. He was truly the last of a generation. He was also predeceased by his wife Olga Patterson (Ogie) and a great-grandson Ethan Rhoades. His life was filled with many memories of which he shared. He left school and joined the army to be trained as a medic. Upon arriving in occupied Japan he became the company clerk after the commander found out he could type. After serving there for a year he arrived back home on Christmas night, 1946. He went back to school at Fuquay High School. He received a standing ovation crossing the stage as a returning veteran. In 1949 he eloped with Leona Dorman and his best friend Panny Smith and Runnel Matthews to Dillon, South Carolina where the couples both married. From that marriage he had two sons Rick(y) and Ron (Ronald). This marriage ended in divorce. Later in life he married Ogie Patterson Cameron. Ogie brought to the marriage his step-daughter Sharon. They spent many happy years together in Fayetteville, ultimately acquiring and moving into the original home place in Willow Springs, NC. Sadly, cancer took her life way too young. Louis had two careers in his life. He worked many years with the civil service at Fort Bragg. He retired early to tend to Ogie's needs in her sickness. Later he began working for Angier Paint and Wallpaper. He retired from there at the age of 85, having been with them about 30 years. About this time his friend and companion, Martha Gale entered his life. They were together for over 35 years. Her family became like his own.
Louis had three primary loves. He loved Jesus Christ as his Savior. He loved his family with all his heart and cared and thought about them every day. His third love was music. He began playing the guitar as a teenager. He played in bands and jam sessions at every opportunity. He loved listening and critiquing music. At one point his jam sessions at Hargis's Barn got to the level of attention that it was featured on TARHEEL TRAVELER. When interviewed as to why he did this his response was "Because it keeps me young." He was still playing at Windsor Point up until his death. He is survived by his son Rick and wife Libba, his son Ronald and wife Vicki and step-daughter Sharon and husband George. He is also survived by granddaughters Leigh Anne and husband Jacob Adams, Lauren and husband Michael Stephens, and Amanda Tostado, and Grandson Brian and wife Emily Tostado. Surviving great-grandchildren are Ansleigh Adams, Tyson and Bristol Stephens, and Sophia Tostado. Also, step great-grandchildren Katelyn and Maddie Stephens and Samuel Shepherd.
The family would like to thank the fine staff of Windsor Point for their kind and compassionate care of him for the last 2 years. You can now take up the speed bumps in the halls. Your prayers and comments are sufficient, but if you would like to make a contribution please do so to the Music Fund at Fellowship Baptist Church, 1701 Bud Lipscomb Road, Willow Spring, NC 27592 or a charity of your choice.
