William Cartmel or Cartmell of Ashness in Borrowdale. Christened: 31 Oct. 1833, at St. John's in the Vale Church, Keswick, Cumberland, England. Was born at Smeathwaite Farm, Township of Legburthwaite, south of Keswick. Was the son of Abraham Cartmell of Smeathwaite and his wife Sarah White.
William Cartmell acquired the tenancy of Ashness Farm circa 1865 through marriage to Mary Ann Atkinson, daughter of Elizabeth Atkinson, the eldest daughter of Joseph Atkinson senior, and Elizabeth Younghusband his wife. William Cartmell and his wife Mary Ann farmed Ashness until circa 1907, when their youngest son Joseph William Cartmell took over until emigrating to Canada in April of 1925. Joseph Morgan Cartmell, son of Joseph William Cartmell, stated that Ashness was 987 acres in size when his father finally quit the farm in 1925.
