William Cartmell acquired the tenancy of Ashness Farm circa 1865 through marriage to Mary Ann Atkinson, daughter of Elizabeth Atkinson, the eldest daughter of Joseph Atkinson senior, and Elizabeth Younghusband his wife. William Cartmell and his wife Mary Ann farmed Ashness until circa 1907, when their youngest son Joseph William Cartmell took over until emigrating to Canada in April of 1925. Joseph Morgan Cartmell, son of Joseph William Cartmell, stated that Ashness was 987 acres in size when his father finally quit the farm in 1925. William Cartmell of Smeathwaite married Mary Ann Atkinson of Ashness, 31 Dec. 1864 at St. John Church, Keswick. William and his wife Mary Ann raised six children; Elizabeth, b:1865; Abraham, b:1868; Sarah, b:1869; Mary Ann, b: 1872; Jane, b:1875; Joseph William, b: 1878.
