Mary Poole was adopted in 1867, age 11, by Farrell Reilly and in 1896 by Mary Doyle Reilly. The San Augustine County court has the records of each of these adoptions and for that reason this report shows the Reilly's as her adoptive parents since there is no viable documentation of who her actual parents were. The U.S. Census records were of no help since every census, including those of the children, showed different birth states for her.

Patrick Smith came to San Augustine in December, 1873 from New Haven, Ct. as one of the heirs to the estate of his uncle, Bernard Reilly, a brother of Farrell Reilly. Patrick's mother was Elizabeth Reilly, a sister of Bernard and Farrell.

Nature took its course and in July, 1874, Patrick and Mary were married. They had twelve children, one of which was John Patrick Smith, my grandfather, after whom I am named.

The first child of Patrick and Mary Reilly Smith was a girl named Bessie Smith, died 1876, according to Michael Smith's family history. There is no marked grave for her in the Smith Cemetery, but she would have been buried on what was then Farrell Reilly's property close to the grave stone of Louie Clark, who died in 1875.

Inscription

From the original limestone marker, badly weathered due to acidic rain, I made the following rubbing: (see photo)

"The links are breaking from family land. A chain is forming in a better land".
