Barbara J. Hickner, 88, of Anderson, passed to her eternal reward on March 13, 2020, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 28, 1931 in Anderson to Carl F. Strader (deceased) and Margaret R. Liptow Strader (deceased).
She was known for her love of life and all people. Her smile was her trademark. Her hugs were her signature. On Oct. 27, 1951, she married the love her life, John W. Hickner (deceased).
She was a lifelong resident of Anderson and was a member of St. Mary Parish for most of her life. Her love of children was fulfilled by being an Eeementary school teacher for St. Mary, St. Ambrose and Anderson Public Schools. Her other career was volunteering. Along with her husband, Barbara was one of the founders of Birthright of Madison County. She earned a bachelor of education and masters degrees from Ball State University.
She is survived by her children, Mary Ann (Joe-deceased) Ohnheiser, Julia R. (Art) Lacey, Paul V. Hickner, Jan M. (Doug Bloor) Hickner , and Mark A. (Karen) Hickner; grandchildren, Bra, Brandon and Matt Ohnheiser, Megan Divine, Trent Bloor, Jack, Travis and Drew Hickner, Trevor, Will and Grant Lacey; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Bill and Paul Strader.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Monsignor Robert Sell III officiating. Burial will follow at East Maplewood Cemetery.
