James Channer was drafted into the army in 1918 (World War I). When he went for basic training the war ended and he was discharged and sent home. James Channer married Margaret Petersen from near Laurel, Nebraska, where he was working. They farmed near Primrose and Cedar Rapids until 1939, when they moved to near Closter. Later they moved to a farm west of Columbus. James had four sons and one daughter. All four sons served in the military during World War II.

Funeral services for James R. Channer, 89, of St. Edward were held Monday, Jan 27, 1986 at the United Methodist Church in St. Edward. Rev. Clair Marvel officiated with burial in the Rose Lawn Cemetery in Columbus.
He died Friday, Jan 24 at the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Music was provided by organist Mrs. Gordon Matzen and singers The Channer Sisters.
Casket bearers were Daniel, Timothy, Paul, Scott, Wayne, Bruce and Craig Channer and David Nyffeler.
James R. Channer, son of Sereno G. and Izorah (Crouch) Channer was born Nov. 29, 1896 in the Shell Creek community northwest of Richland in Colfax County. His family moved to Cozad where they lived a short time before moving to Primrose where Jim attended grade school and high school. After his schooling, he worked for several lumberyards and grain elevators including one at Boone, NE before moving to Wareham, near Sioux City.
On March 9, 1921 he married Margaret Petersen at Beldon. To this union five children were born. The couple began farming south of Cedar Rapids and farmed in Boone County until 1943 when they moved to Columbus. Margaret died Sept. 30, 1946. In 1950 Jim moved to a farm northwest of St. Edward. Jim was married to Lucy McAlpine in 1952 but this marriage lasted a short time before subsequently ending in divorce.
On Dec. 31, 1962 Jim and Julia Skanderup were married at Seward, and made their home in St. Edward. Julia died August 23, 1981. In August of 1984, Jim became a resident of Cloverlodge Care Center.
Jim had been a long time member of the Methodist Church where he served as treasurer, and was active with the Methodist Men. He served on the Board of Directors of the Platte County Agricultural Society, served on the Platte County Extension Board, was a member of Farm Bureau, the Platte County Feeders Assn., and as well as a 4-H leader in the Monroe and Fosenberg communities for many years.
Jim is survived by his children; James R. of Texas; Robert of Kent, Wa.; Betty (Mrs. Harold) Nyffeler of Columbus; Harry of Lansdale, Pa., and Carroll of Columbus; one step-daughter Lesta Westmore of Omaha; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, wife Julia; one brother, Charles and two grandchildren.
