Services Held July 5 for R.C. Heiner
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 5 at 1 p.m. in the Bedford ward Chapel for Robert Charles Heiner, 73, prominent and well known Bedford resident, who died of a heart attack July 2 at Bedford, with Counselor Ralph Heiner conducting. Burial was in the Bedford Cemetery.
He was born June 16, 1896 in a small two-room home in Bedford. where Joe Heiner and family now live. He was the oldest of five children born to Mr and Mrs C.G. Heiner. As a child he loved the outdoor sports such as skiing, sleigh riding, hunting, playing ball and fishing.
He received most of his schooling in the old Bedford Church House, along with some in a private home. He attended the 8th grade in the school house after it was built.
He was ordained an Elder in the LDS Church, and married Sylvia Wolfley Oct 1, 1915 in the Salt Lake Temple. It took them a week traveling by horse and wagon to make the trip, which they considered their honeymoon.
A week after they were married, Robert secured a job working for Ray Humpherys. During the winter he worked at logging in the canyons, and in the evenings Sylvia helped him with the chores. In the spring they homesteaded a 320 acre farm in Bedford and built a small two-room cabin.
Robert hauled freight in winters to bring in needed supplies for his parents and their store. The trips were very hard and long in cold weather, and on one trip he came down with the measles.
After five years were up, they bought 80 acres of ground from Joe Hincks where their home is now located. Later they bought another 80 acres from Will Roos, and built a nice home, which burned down on Nov 17, 1927. They lived in a granary until Robert could get more logs out and build the home they have since been residing in.
Mr Heiner and Ernest Wolfley bought 160 acres, cleared, and each took 80 acres to farm, owning and sharing their farm, machinery and getting along very well.
In 1942 they lost all their cattle from diphtheria, and Mr Wolfley supplied their family with milk until they were able to obtain more cows.
Fishing was Robert's hobby and he spent many happy hours at it.
He served as a director of Lower Valley Power and Light Inc. and as a director in the Star Valley Swiss Cheese Co. in Thayne. He worked hard to help get a pipeline and water system in Bedford. He was skilled as a carpenter and enjoyed this work, building hundreds of buildings in the valley, including the old Bedford and Thayne creameries and the ward cultural hall. He helped build the American Theatre at Thayne and many homes and taught his sons the trade. He made many fine caskets. In his later years he devoted much time to beautification of the Bedford Cemetery.
Seven children were born to the Heiner's. Two children died in infancy and LaVere died March 20, 1968. Survivors are three sons, Delbert, Glenn and Morris, Bedford, a daughter, Mrs Alean Boothe, Clearfield, Utah; 28 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. They sent two sons on LDS missions and helped send two grandsons and two granddaughters.
