Bernice was born on December 2, 1917, on the family farm near Rock Creek Lake, west of Grinnell, the daughter of Herman and Gladys Shill Deppe. She was raised on the family farm, attended rural school, and graduated with the Class of 1935 from Grinnell High School. Following her education she worked for the Grinnell Shoe Company.

On May 6, 1949, she married John Winchell at Tipton, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked in the office of the Rudy-Patrick Seed Company. In the 1970, the couple moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, and she worked for the Research Seed Company. Following her retirement in 1980 they returned to Grinnell.

Bernice was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club. She enjoyed photography, fishing, bowling, painting, gardening, cooking, playing cards, and watching pro and college sporting events.

She is survived by two brothers, Gerald Deppe and Ernest 'Bud' Deppe, both of Grinnell; her sister, Maxine Wilson of Grinnell; and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Albert Deppe; and one sister, Della Springer.
