He married Mattie Pearl Cole of Puncheon, Giles County in 1922, and their eldest child, Lewis Harold, was born in Prospect, Giles County in 1923. They owned and operated a small gas station and store, which unfortunately burned down in 1924 or 1925. With no insurance and my grandmother pregnant, my grandfather headed north to Akron, Ohio where jobs were plentiful. My grandmother and her toddler son stayed with her brother until my grandfather got settled in Ohio. After their daughter Mildred was born, my grandfather returned to Tennessee to retrieve them for the final move north. He would work for Goodyear for 37 years before retiring.
Russell died of an abdominal aortic aneurysm in 1974. After collapsing, he said to my grandmother, "I'm a goner." My grandmother, who was half his size, managed to get him in nicer pajamas for the trip to the hospital.
Tidbits:
- His nickname growing up was "Penny," and his daughter Alice named her daughter that.
- He was an avid Indians fan and watched them on TV whenever possible.
- He loved to play solitaire.
- He was a man of few words, but was very kind.
- He did not own a car. His brother Lyle provided car transportation, when necessary.
