She was born to James Benjamin Newton and Ophelia Jane Evard on 3/28/1896 in Milano, TX. She became a member of the First Baptist Church in Milano and was church organist at the age of 12 and remained as pianist or organist at the Milano Church and later at the First Baptist Church, Thorndale, until the 1960's. Mrs. Butts continuous membership in the First Baptist Church, Thorndale embraced a period of more than 50 years, longer than any other member of the church. She attended school in Milano and continued her education at the San Marcos Baptist Academy. She was associated with the Rebekahs and at age 18 became the youngest Grand Noble in Texas, having succeeded her mother in that position. Longtime member, joining in 1923, of the Wednesday Music Club in Taylor and former piano teacher in Thorndale. She resided at SPJST Nursing home in Taylor for the last four years.
She married Lonnie George Butts of Milano on 2/26/1918. He preceded her in death in 1969. Following his discharge from the Army after WW-1 they moved to Thorndale where Mr. Butts was associated with Thorndale Mercantile Co. In 1932 he opened Butts Dry Goods in Thorndale. She was also preceded in death by 5 brothers, and 8 sisters.
SURVIVORS: Daughter, Mrs. Marion (Janette) Flanagan of Orange, CA.; son, Newton Butts of Thorndale; 5 grandchildren, Carolyn Kolka, Donna Westermann, Nell Flanagan, Lisa Butts, and Todd Butts; great-granddaughter, Melissa Westerman.
