From Fredericksburg Funeral Home:

Our mother, Opal Louise Schnelle, passed away on July 19, 2019. Her spiritual legacies included her gifts of hospitality and service. She had a way of leaving every person she met with the feeling that they were special. This came from her deep love of people and her truly knowing each person has something unique to offer. She had a way of seeing the best in all and wanted everyone to know they were loved.

Opal was the fifth of six children and grew up on a ranch. She attended elementary school in Cypress Mill, Texas and high school in Johnson City. After graduating from high school she attended Durham Business School which, in her future would become a great asset. She married the “love of her life” Carleton. The two of them owned and operated numerous businesses which included a five and dime store in Yorktown, Texas as well as Joy and Gay Fabric Shop, Schnelle Shoes and Kegel Lanes all located in Fredericksburg. They greeted every customer like they were family.

Opal’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlights of her life. Her first child, Joe Carleton, died at the age of 2 in a tragic accident. This left a sadness that lasted a lifetime. She had 3 more children, 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren all of whom experienced her special sparkle of love.

Volunteering was one of the ways Opal shared her love. For numerous years she was a volunteer at the Hill Country Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was also available for the members of Bethany Lutheran Church who needed help. Her husband Carleton was a musician and entertained all over the Hill Country. Opal was the wind beneath his wings, she was right by his side helping lead sing-a-longs when he played for local nursing homes.

The last 11 years of her life was spent as a resident of Knopp Nursing Home where she touched the lives of staff and fellow residents alike. The love that she shared will and has been passed on from generation to generation. Mom, you will be missed for sure but the lessons you have taught will remain forever and ever.

Opal Louise (Fuchs) Schnelle left this world peacefully on July 19, 2019 at the age of 98. All her children, grand-children and great-grand-children had the opportunity to surround her with love as they thanked her for the many ways she touched their lives. Opal was born on June 2, 1921 to Georgia Bell and Adolf Fuchs of Cypress Mill, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carleton Schnelle and her precious son, Joe Carleton, as well as her three brothers and two sisters; Thomas Fox (wife Pauline), A.D. Fuchs (wife Caroline), Albert Fuchs (wife Nita), Elmyra Nagel (husband Gerald) and Lucy Gammons (husband Carl).

Opal had three surviving children that were devoted to their mother: Joy Fournier (husband Charlie) of Metairie, Louisiana, Gay Nimitz (husband Roy Maxfeldt) of San Antonio, Texas and Carleton Jr. “Bubba” (wife Pamela) of Fredericksburg, Texas. Opal’s world became bigger and brighter when her four grandchildren were born: Toby Nimitz (wife Lisa Shelton), Kendra “Schnelle” Ottmers (husband Jeremy), Heidi “Nimitz” Thompson (husband James) and Trey Schnelle (wife Krystle). These four grandchildren had babies of there own and Opal had the honor of being a great-grandmother to eight little ones who all called her “Mamo”: Jordan Nimitz, Justine Nimitz, Kailey Schnelle, Brooklyn Schnelle, Trenton Schnelle, Hyleigh Ottmers, Kaden Ottmers and Robert Thompson.

Opal was respected, loved and cherished by all who knew her.
