Avery Richard Mashburn, 99, of Little Savannah Road, Cullowhee, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Cullowhee Baptist Church, of which he was a member and deacon. The Revs. Dr. Jeffery Vickery and Tonya Vickery officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department.

A native of Macon County, he had lived in Jackson County most of his life. He retired from Western Carolina University physical plant and was a mechanic and welder. He was the oldest living founding member of the Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a Mason and a member of the East LaPorte Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. He was a son of the late Charles and Jenny Angel Mashburn.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Pearl Parker Mashburn, who died Dec. 27, 2003; one son, Richard Mashburn; one daughter, Aradella Mashburn; and first wife, Lydia Higdon Mashburn.

Surviving are three daughters, Arbra Gibson and Harriet Parker, both of Cullowhee, and Lowaine Wilson of Lake Junaluska; three sisters, Janie Hardin of Canton, Deeda Elmore of Franklin and Lola Farraro of Florida; one brother, Dean Mashburn of Franklin; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
