Bartholemew fought for the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War as did his father and all 5 of his brothers. Bart became an Ensign in May 1780 under Captain Felix Good of the 7th Company, 4th Battalion of the Pennsylvania Militia from Northampton County. At the time Bart was 27 years of age and listed as a tavern keeper living in Allentown, PA. He was married that same year to his wife Elizabeth. Together they had 7 children to reach the age of maturity. The first three children were born in Pennsylvania. The remainder were all born in New York State.

Five of Bartholemew's seven children have memorials on Find a Grave listed on this page. Missing are Bart's two oldest children including eldest son George Hittle (1781-1823) and eldest daughter Sallie (Hittle) Spaid (b. 1784) wife of John Spaid.

After the Revolutionary War Bartholemew and wife Elizabeth and their growing family headed to New York State and settled in Fayette, Seneca County, New York. Bart became the owner of his own tavern.
