Georg Michael Hittel came to America and arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship Winter Galley on 5 September 1738. He signed his last name Hüttel on his Oaths of Allegiance.

He served in the French and Indian War and is included in the Revolutionary War Memorial at Jerusalem Church (Western Salisbury).

While it's not hard to find online gedcoms which list his father as a Peter Hittel/Hittle, and his birthplace as Kusel, Michael's baptismal record from the Lutheran Church in the village of Hohebach, Wuerttemberg show that his parents were Leonhardt and Eva Barbara (Schmid) Huettel, who were married in that same church early in 1714.

His surname shows up on various records as Hittel, Hittle Hittler, Hittlee, Hutler, Huddel and others as the ü (as he signed his surname) got dropped to i from time to time as others heard and recorded his name. Some records have as variant of renderings as Huckel and Hickel.

When searching records for him, be sure to remember that GMH was a typical German immigrant who was known by what we might call his "middle name." He was known as Michael and is so referenced many places, including his will.

I happen to be one of his very many 5G-Grandsons.
