WORLD WAR I

Son of Julius David and Annie Glisson Rowell. Elly married Martha Williford on July 25 1925.

"I did see Elly once, the year he died, 1937. He was in the Vets Hospital at Columbia. He was about six feet tall with jet black hair. His wife Martha was also fairly tall and had black hair that was lighter than Uncle Elly's. Uncle Elly seemed friendly and even smiled at me a few times. If I had gotten to know him I think I would have liked him.

My Father took us to Uncle Elly's funeral. He was buried in a cemetery in Marion. Uncle Elly was a school teacher as was his wife Martha. It's my understanding that Mary Frances also became a school teacher, I even heard once that she taught at a College.

Elly graduated from Clemson in 1916. He would work a year, then go to school a year, so it took eight years for him to finish.

He was in the vets hospital because he was gassed in WW I and his lungs failed." - Ed Rowell
