Mary Ann Metcalf was born about 1836, the fifth of eight children and third of four daughters of William and Elizabeth (Elkins) Metcalf, probably born in Livingstone County, Missouri. She married James (Jim) Wilson in 1854, and six children by him, the last child some months after Jim's murder at the hands of Missouri bushwackers (Confederate guerrillas who refused to surrender at the close of the war and continued to terrorize the countryside). She told her children that she knew her husband had been murdered when a man came to her door begging for food and wearing her husband's homespun shirt.

She married Hosea ("Hosey") Coleman in 1867, and had at least three more children by him. She died in 1897, and is thought to have been buried in a small family plot whose location is now unknown.
