Col. Franklin Merle Campbell
March 13, 1940 - March 18, 2019

Franklin Merle Campbell, Jr., was born 13 March 1940 in The Dalles, Oregon, and died 18 March 2019 at his home in Damascus, Oregon. He was the first of two sons born to F. Merle Campbell, Sr., and Henriette Barbara (Zurflueh) Campbell. His father died in 1987, and his mother died in 2000.

While growing up, Merle lived most of his life in towns in Oregon, but also lived in Walla Walla, Washington, where he attended high school, and graduated from the Clackamas High School, in Oregon. He also attended Portland State University, in Portland. His military service took him to schools in Fort Belvoir, Virginia and in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Merle joined the Oregon National Guard Field Artillery Unit in 1961; attended Officer Candidate School in 1965, and was commissioned as an artillery officer. He joined the 1249th Engineering Battalion and rose through the ranks to become the Commander of the 1249th Engineers in 1981. He also joined the Oregon State Area Command. Merle retired in 1994 after serving over 33 years.

Merle was also a realtor, a home builder and an activist. He formed the class action group, Dieselgate, which successfully sued General Motors for their faulty diesel cars, and was instrumental in the writing and passing of the Oregon Lemon Laws.

Merle loved cars, especially his Jaguars, and he loved dogs, especially Old English Mastiffs. Merle's father was a breeder of these dogs, so he grew up around them. In retirement, Merle and Mary enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and camping with family.

He was the type of person who could make a connection with most people he met. He also had the ability of telling stories in a way which made you wonder if they were true or if he was stretching the truth. If you looked at his eyes, and saw a bit of a twinkle, you knew he was kidding. He had a great smile which would also give him away.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, his three daughters, Kelly, Tracy and Kerry, his three grandchildren, and brother, Mark.

Funeral service for Merle, 1:00 p.m., Sunday, 31 March 2019 at Mt. Scott Funeral Home, S.E. 59th & Foster Rd. Interment in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland Oregon, 2:00 p.m., Monday, 1 April 2019.

Merle didn't like his first name, so he was known as F. Merle Campbell, Jr., Merle, or Junior, and some close family members called him Tarz. While growing up, he enjoyed body building, and one of his favorite characters was Tarzan. Early on, he informed family that he wanted to be called Tarz.
