He was a graduate of Richland Center High School in 1938. In July of 1942 he entered the Army. After basic training he entered the signal core and was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. During his 3 year tour he made stops in Australia, New Guinea, Admiralty Is, the Philippines and Japan where he was a radio operator. While in the service he had the honor of being a radio operator for General MacArthur while in the Philippines. He was Honorably Discharged on November 3, 1945 as a Teck 3 Staff Sargent. For his service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater he received 4 Bronze stars with Bronze Arrowhead and Philippines Liberation Ribbon with l Bronze Star.
He married Charlotte Murfitt Chapman on May l2, 1946 and she preceded him in death on November 12, 1984. Together they raised 3 children, Lyle Chapman, (wife, Regina), Lynda Chapman (preceded in death), and Rex Chapman, (wife, Christine). While married to Charlotte, he worked on many farms in the Brook area and retired as a custodian at the Brook Grade School. Darrel also coached many basketball teams and officiated many sports. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Purdue Boilermaker fan.
His hobbies were golf, and playing Pinochle and Euchre and watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren play sports.
In March of l987 Darrel married Eloise Chapman who preceded him in death on May l8, 2012. He had 2 step-children, DeWayne & Connie Chapman and Marsha & Rusty Carlson.
Darrel has 7 Grandchildren: Steve & Tisha Hedden, Adam & Rosa Hedden, Eric Chapman, (fianc'e Kristine) , Todd & Daisy Chapman, David & Kandis Chapman, Scott Chapman, K.D. & Alex Pond. He also has l4 Great Grandchildren.
Darrel was a member of the Brook United Methodist Church, 50 year member of the Order Knights of Pythias and a continuous 74 year member of the American Legion.
Visitation will be at Gerts Funeral Home in Brook, Indiana at 10:00 am (CST) on Friday February l, 2019, services at ll:00 am (CST) by Rick Gerts and Pastor Jim Steffens, and burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery, Brook, IN. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Brook Veterans Memorial Fund through the Brook Town Hall. A special Thank You to Sothern Care Hospice and Dr. Patrick Sheets.
