Oscar von Kochtitzky found refuge in this country after being driven in exile from his own country, Hungary, following the Austrian-Hungarian Revolution (or Kossuth Revolution) of 1848 in which he fought on the side of the Revolutionaries.

During the U.S. Civil War, Oscar enlisted in the 115th Regiment Ohio Volunteers, Co. I, serving with them through much of War, and was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. He removed to Missouri in 1857 (in order to "live in a Democrat State") and later came to Jefferson City in 1872 when he was appointed Chief Commissioner. In 1876 he was engaged in building the Little River Valley and Arkansas Railroad.

He dropped the "von" from his family name in order to more Americanize it.

His life is described in more detail in the book Oscar von Kochtitzky and A Search for His Family Origin published privately by the Kochtitzky Family Association.
