During the U.S. Civil War, Oscar enlisted in the 115th Regiment Ohio Volunteers, Co. I, serving with them through much of War, and was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. He removed to Missouri in 1857 (in order to "live in a Democrat State") and later came to Jefferson City in 1872 when he was appointed Chief Commissioner. In 1876 he was engaged in building the Little River Valley and Arkansas Railroad.
He dropped the "von" from his family name in order to more Americanize it.
