Harper retired after many years, as a self-employed Building Contractor. In his early years he worked for the former Harry Walter Funeral Home and Walter Swimming Pool both in McSherrystown. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church in McSherrystown where he served on the advisory board, McSherrystown Knights of Columbus, and Have Gun Will Hunt – Hunting Camp. He was a life member of SAVES and the McSherrystown Home Assoc. Harper coached McSherrystown youth football and baseball, was involved with and assisted coaching Delone Catholic High School Football in the 1960’s and helped with New Oxford High School Football in the 1990’s. He enjoyed vacations to Rehoboth Beach, spending time on the Chesapeake Bay on his boat the “Dancing Bair” and spending time with family, friends and his granddogs Candy and Taffy.
Surviving are his daughter, Cynthia L. Brillhart and husband Charles of McSherrystown, his son in many ways, Dain Kauffman; two grandsons, Douglas and Eric Cole; six great-grandchildren, Darian, Dedre, Katelyn, Emilee, Trea, and Natalie; and a sister Harriet L. Decker and husband Bud of Brushtown. He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory A. “Moe” Bair, and three siblings, Loretta M. Berkheimer, Helen C. Slaybaugh and Ruth A. Weaver. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at Annunciation Catholic Church, McSherrystown with Rev. Lawrence W. Sherdel and Rev. Charles L. Persing concelebrating. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, McSherrystown. Serving as pallbearers will be: Douglas Cole, Eric Cole, Dain Kauffman, Steve Topper, Andy Topper and Barry Decker.
