Son of California Gold Rush Pioneers, James Wyatt Mecartea and Elvira Delvis Smith, of Big Oak Flat California. One of 13 living children (12 boys-1 girl). Walter's obituary says he was the First White Child born in Chinese Camp California. Mecartea Family is mentioned in both California Historical books: The Big Oak Flat Road and The Saga of Old Tuolumne. Walter married only once, to Marian Ruamy Rowland/Woods/Mecartea/Williams. Parents to Edith Ruth Mecartea/Hogan/Mattly. He died while living near this daughter, the widow of Luther Washington Hogan, in Bakersfield California. He is buried next to Luther, Garden of Peace, Block 6, Lot 9.
