His brother Eugene said;"One day he was invited to ride into Sonora in a truck with a friend. He changed his shirt, stuck his worn wallet into his pocket and went along. On their return trip up the Priest Grade, the truck overturned, pinning Austin beneath the wreckage and killing him instantly. His death came as a great shock to Eugene and his many friends who said, "He might of lived many years yet, for he never was known to complain of an ailment. He never got into trouble and never gave anyone trouble."
