Mary Irvine Ashby (Smith) was born Sarah Elizabeth Markham and William Ashby Sr.

The family moved to Vernal, Uintah, Utah when Mary was six. They bought a farm in Maeser, northwest of Vernal. Mary attended school there with six years of not being tardy or absent. She would have made the seventh year, but had the measles the last few days of school. She attended high school at Vernal, the Uintah Academy, and one year at Brigham Young University.

Mary's mother was quite sick for a time and Mary and Leonia helped take care of her and did the housework. Her mother died January 1, 1913 and care of the home went to the girls. Her father died January 22, 1920 and Mary went to stay with Aunt Julina Markham Crow and helped her do genealogy.

Mary filled a mission in California and when she returned she spent the summer with her brother Curtis and wife Eva. In the fall of 1924 she taught school at Jensen, and knew how to discipline the unruly children. She planned on getting married, so she did not go back to Jensen in 1925.

Mary married Thomas Brigham Smith on October 7, 1925 in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Santaquin, Utah, living on the Smith farm for a time. Milton was born April 2, 1927. On that morning Santaquin had its worst fire.

Lawrence Duke was born October 24, 1928 while they lived at Willard Smith's. Sharlene was born December 18, 1930 there also. The house they lived in burned down, so they moved to Olivia Peterson's place and here Wilma Deane was born April 25, 1933, and Elveda was born February 18, 1935.
Building their own home proved to be difficult, but Mary was very patient with the inconvenience.

As each child was asked to fill a mission she would say the house can wait until they get back. Through the years her husband Thomas had jobs where he had to be away for weeks at a time. In November 1952 when he was home fixing the bathroom, getting things fixed for the winter. Mary took sick and she passed away November 3, 1952.
