ELIAS ASHBY

Elias Ashby was born 26 Dec 1899 at Lake Shore, Utah, the son of William and Sarah Elizabeth Markham Ashby. When he was two years old the family moved to Vernal, Uintah, Utah, having been called by the first presidency of the Church to help settle the country there. His father was a successful cattleman. He owned a large ranch and with a large family of 11 children, everyone had to work.

Elias grew to manhood and attended Vernal schools. Love and kindness was ever present in their home. His mother passed away 1 January 1913 and this left an added responsibility for everyone, but they were close and managed well. William died 22 January 1920. Elias stayed in Vernal for two years, then came to Lehi and worked on construction for some time. Then he went to work for Rhoda McKinny on her ranch in Fairfield, Utah.

It was here he met a lovely damsel by the name of Marjorie Cook. Soon a romance was started and on 15 August 1924 they were married at the courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah. Wanting something more than a civil marriage they were sealed 16 March 1925 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.

Their marriage was a happy one. They moved to Leland and here Edward was born. They moved to Benjamin and Spanish Fork and then bought a home in Benjamin, Utah. To this couple were born nine children. They have brought many joys to their parents. Their son Reed passed away 4 November 1945, age 13. This was a sad time for all of them.

Marjorie's health began to fail and many anxious hours, months and days were spent in prayers offered for her, but each day seemed a little closer to death. She never murmered. Marjorie would always smile and say everything was fine. Elias was a king, devoted husband and father. He never failed to give her love and respect. But God knew her mission here was finished and she passed away in the Payson Hospital 28 September 1961.

Again Elias and the children picked up the pieces. Many loving memories and many lonely hours were there, because where death comes it brings sorrow and heartaches.

Elias work some time for Utah Idaho Sugar Company and also Del Monte or Cal Pack in Spanish Fork. Everyone held Elias in high esteem and he was loved by all who knew him. He was honest and kind and always greeted you with a smile.

Elias met Mabel Boyack Davis and they were married 15 October 1962. They enjoyed many happy times together. Elias was an elder in the Benjamin Ward and an honorable citizen and was loved and respected by many. Four months ago his heart bothered him and never seemed to improve. He was taken to the Payson Hospital Wednesday 29 December and passed away Friday 31 December 1965 at 5:00 AM.

Elias and Marjorie have 18 grandchildren and a host of friends and loved ones.
