Joseph, son of Jacob and Eve Avey of Pa., and Hagerstown, Maryland served in the Revolutionary War according to the Official Roster of Ohio. In 1790, Joseph married Kesia Garland; and together they had nine children who lived to adulthood.

In 1797 (DAR 1955:35) they moved west to the Northwest Territory, settling in Ky. About 1800, they again moved to settle in Union Township. Records show that they built the first log cabin on the East Fork of Little Miami. Their children included: James, Joseph, John F., Elizabeth (wife of Wm. Fisher), Sally (wife of Dr. Spence), Presocia (wife of Harvey Perin), Kezia (wife of D.Sutton), and Martha (wife of Rev. Hall).

Nearby neighbors are reported to include a number of well known early settlers-

J. Teal, Maj. Shaylor, J. Fox, T. Robinson, J. McGuire, Rev. Stephen Robinson, Wm. Jones, and H. Davis (brother of S. Davis).

Both Joseph and Kezia were founding members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Although early church records are incomplete, existing reports cite some of the area's first religious services were held in the Avey homestead in early 1800's. Remnants of the early log home exist, but the existing house has been built around it. Close by to the home, Tealtown Cemetery has some of the earliest burials recorded in Union Township. The earliest known burial in the cemetery is in 1818; and the cemetery was legally transferred by deed to the M.E. Church in 1831 (Deed Book v.27-28, C2, 1830-1831- Clermont County, Ohio).
