Her teenage years were spent in Castle Dale and Orangeville while she went to Central High School. She worked at a boarding house where four young school teachers boarded. She ended marrying one of them when she graduated in 1937. He was the band and English teacher named Parley Thorderson. They moved to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho.
In 1942 they moved to Kaysville, Utah and he taught at Davis High School. Parley had diabetes and school teachers were not paid that much so Winona went to work for HAFB in 1951. She enjoyed her work, even though she didn't have many skills to start with, she did a good job and kept advancing until she became a Supply Systems Analyst.
Parley died in 1972 of complications from diabetes. By this time most of her six children were out of the home, with only one late comer still at home who was 12. She has a lot of decendents now which includes 18 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Her children are: John Richard (Dick) and Carol, Nedra and LeRoy Everstreet, Sheila and DeVon Steiner, Connie and Grant (deceased) Lowder, Zachary E. (Zak) and Donna, and Kimball J. (Kim) and Claudia Thorderson.
Winona took an early retirement in 1974 and became restless after a while and decided to try some other jobs. She got jobs as a travel agent, a security salesperson, and a real estate agent, soshe had a lot of diversity and enjoyed all of them. She traveled extensively and enjoyed everything. She loves to dance, play games, (especially bridge), travel and be with family and her wonderful friends. She has been a member of the Athena Club for 71 years and manages to keep busy.
There will be an open house to greet and honor her on her birthday, Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Barnes Park in Kaysville.
