He was the son of Palmer (Pal) and May-me Springer York, who along with three brothers: Homer, Coleen, Cletis and a sister Helen Ingram preceded him in death.
Clyde, as he was known by his many family and friends, was an avid member and served as deacon of the Pleasant Union Congregational Christian Church since 1971.
He served his country in the U.S. Army from July 1945 until February 1947. He was also a member of the Kiwanis for several years and was the recipient of the Ted Satterfield Community Service Award in 1996.
In his early life he was a self-employed carpenter. Later he worked for the state of Illinois for 23 years until he retired April 1, 1988.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Among his survivors is his beloved wife of 61 years, Elsie (Trout) York who he took for his bride on Sept. 8, 1945, and son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Sharon York, a granddaughter and husband Paula Kay (York) Karcher, a grandson and wife Jeff and Michelle York, four great-grandchildren whom he cherished: Justin and Jaden York, and Josh and Ashley Karcher of Mc-Leansboro, a sister and brother-in-law: Vennabelle and Roy Martin and a brother and sister-in-law: Vores and Kathleen York of Fairfield and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
A private family funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial and military graveside rites in Old Springer Cemetery near Blairs-ville with the Rev. Jay Vineyard officiating.
The family request no flowers and ask that memorials be made to the Pleasant Union Congregational Christian Church.
