VILLAGE OF GREY EAGLE
Thomas Callahan was the first settler in the Grey Eagle country where he arrived in the summer of 1867 with his family in a covered wagon, taking a homestead north of Big Birch lake. This, we believe, was the first homestead taken in the township. The township was then part of the Town of Long Prairie. On March 24, 1869, it became part of the Town of Birch...., continuing as such until September 15, 1873, when the Town of Grey Eagle was organized. Mr Callahan continued on his farm south of the present village until his death. His family continued on the farm after his death for a short time and then removed to Sauk Centre, where the Callahan children took advantage of the excellent schools in that town. Mr. Callahan was twice married, first to a lady in Indiana, whose name we do not have. To this marriage were born the following named children: Edmond, who soon followed his father in the movement to Grey Eagle; a daughter, who married Rev. Levi B. Davis; Jacob, Thomas and Jerry, the subsequent history of the last three we do not have. After the death of Mrs. Callahan, he married Mrs. Elizabeth Davis and to this marriage were born the following named children: George B. Callahan, who is the earliest settler of the town now living; James Callahan, who became a minister of the gospel, and is now dead; Sylvester S., who was active as a teacher, storekeeper and hotelkeeper in Grey Eagle; Mary, who married Dr. Elmer Schafer and now resides in Montana.

The information above is Thomas Callahan's Obituary. The 1850 Census in Owen Township, Jackson County, Indiana shows his first wife Hester, Age 45, Born in Virginia. Children shown are Edmund, 25; Jonathan 16; Thomas, 14; Jacob, 12, and Jeremiah, 10. Also, in same family, Hester's apparent brother and nephew are Harrison Beem, 34 and John Beem 8 were both born in Indiana. Also, it is believedthat Hester was born Hester Urma Beem in Virginia in 1805.
