John was the son of William Charles and Susannah Wright Brown. He married Dovie Palestine Chastain on August 11, 1889 in Crawford, Texas. This union resulted in fourteen children of which eleven lived to adulthood.

He was a carpenter and farmer by trade and wrote a column for the Graham Reporter newspaper under the pen name "Plow Boy". As a carpenter, he did the intricate "gingerbread" woodwork which was used so often on houses at that time. He took a keen interest in politics, his community and it's church and school at times serving as school trustee. He was a member of the Nazarene Church, but after moving to Young County, he joined the Presbyterian Church because there was no Nazarene Church in Graham at that time.

NOTE: There were two more boys born to John and Dovie. At this time could find no burial location for them.

Henry Morrison Brown (12 Jan. 1898--25 Aug. 1899)
Lemuel Lee Brown (04 Feb. 1900--09 Aug. 1901)
