Barbara Ann Bathe Clayton went to her heavenly home at 7:43 a.m. on Thursday morning, September 6, 2018 in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon.

Barbara was born January 26, 1935 in Moultrie County, the daughter of Berthol and Myrtie Burtcheard Bathe. Barbara was a member of the Allenville Christian Church, which she dearly loved, and was in attendance every Sunday when she was able, including the last Sunday of her life. She was a member of the Church’s Quilting Club and also helped with their monthly breakfasts. She enjoyed camping trips with the family in her younger days. She especially treasured the trip out West and up the coast to Washington. Her hobbies were growing flowers, red zinnias were her favorite, and spent hours working in her flower beds, and rearranging her rocks. She was a wonderful cook, and loved to play Scrabble. She was a hard worker. She was employed at Lucy Ellen Candy for several years, then worked as a cleaning lady for several local families.

Barbara loved family parties. Always with games and prizes. Always at her home. She had a party at Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, New Year’s, birthdays, Easter, and of course Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. She thrived on her get-togethers.

On April 9, 1955, Barbara and her sister, Mayme, and their boyfriends, ran off to Paris, Illinois to get married. Barbara married Orval Clayton, and he survives. Mayme married John Knox, and the two couples usually celebrated their 63 years of marriage doing something together. Barb and Orval became parents to three children, Ronnie (Julie) Clayton of Madison, Indiana, Allen Clayton of Sullivan and Nancy Leila Clayton, who died in a tragic accident on October 29, 2016.

Other survivors include grandsons, Andy (Megan) Clayton of St. Louis, Missouri and Aaron (Greta) Clayton of Madison, Indiana; great-grandson, Raylon Clayton and great-granddaughter Nora Jane Clayton both of Madison, Indiana; sisters, Audrey (Bill) England of Allenville, Mayme (John) Knox of rural Sullivan and Joan (Don) Bishop of Youngstown, Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Three brothers, Archie, Fonrose and David all preceded her in death.

One of her last missons was to make several phone calls to tell people to be sure and send a birthday card to sister Joan in Florida for her 75th birthday, which was coming up on September 6th. Barbara passed away early in the morning on Joan’s birthday.

The Welcome Mat was always out at her house - always! And then she or Orval would say ‘pull up a chair and fill your plate. There’s plenty." She will be sadly missed as a wife, mother, sister, grandma, aunt and friend.
