He enlisted on May 26, 1861, in Anna, Illinois, and was mustered in as a Musician. He served with Company A, 18th Illinois Infantry and with Company F, 13th Illinois Consolidated Cavalry and was mustered out on August 31, 1865, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
He married 1st on November 25, 1866, Randolph County, Arkansas, to Lucretia Julian Holley.
He married 2nd on March 12, 1873, Independence County, Arkansas, to Amanda Byrum.
Amanda appears with her son as a widow in the 1900 census, but she and Francis were were both still living in 1910 in Independence County, Arkansas.
