Death of G. D. Eccles

G. D. Eccles, one of the pioneer citizens of Pleasant township, died suddenly at his home in Greenwood Saturday afternoon about one o’clock. It was his seventy-ninth birthday anniversary and in honor of the occasion his children had been invited to spend the day. Owing to the illness of his daughter, S. B. Eccles of this city could not be present.

Mr. Eccles arose Saturday morning feeling unusually well, ate a hearty breakfast and said he had not felt as well for some time. After breakfast he went about doing chores, killed and dressed a turkey and at ten o’clock called on some sick neighbors. At noon he said he believed that he had eaten too much breakfast and that his stomach hurt him. He told the family to go to dinner and he would drink a cup of coffee. As Mrs. Eccles and her son, Albert, sat down to dinner they heard Mr. Eccles fall. Rushing into the sitting room they found him lying on the floor, and before he could be carried to a couch, he expired. Death was due to apoplexy.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at the Presbyterian church in Greenwood, conducted by Rev. Smith Miller.

Deceased was a man well known and held in the highest respect, always courteous and honorable in his dealings with men. He was born in Mercer County, Ky., March 3rd, 1820. With his parents he came to this county in 1835 and located on the farm south of Greenwood. In early life Mr. Eccles learned the carpenter trade which occupation he followed for many years. In 1843 he went to Iowa where he remained three years with a brother, Joseph, farming. In 1846 he returned to Johnson county, but in 1854 he moved to Washington, Ill., where he remained three years working at his trade and clerking in a store. He again returned to this county in 1858 and since that time had devoted his entire attention to farming on the home place. At the death of his father in 1859 he became the owner of the old homestead. Deceased was married Dec. 9, 1857 to Mary G. Lemasters of Pleasant township, and to them were born three children, Samuel B., Albert C. and John C. Eccles.
