He was a native of Gaston County, former member of the VFW, Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, received the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross Color and Rifle Marksman Badge.
