William Boyd Adams, 89, of 310 Heather Street, Boone, passed away Thursday April 11, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, after an extended illness.

He was born April 20, 1923, in Alexander County to the late John Thomas Adams and Ruby Turner Adams. Boyd was a retired grading contractor who did construction work throughout the U.S. southeastern states. During World War II, Boyd welded Liberty ships; producing a ship every three days, that was vitally needed in the war effort. He married his Alexander County sweetheart, the late Ann Neal Marshall, daughter of the late Reece Clark Marshall and Sally Keller Marshall. He was also a member of Carson Chapel United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Renn Adams, Paul Adams and Aaron Adams.

He is survived by one son, William Boyd "Billy" Adams II and wife, Lisa, of Hiddenite; two daughters, Judy Adams Hawley and husband, David, of Boone, Barbara Ann Mullis and husband, Anthony, of Denton; one sister, Margaret A. Stikeleather of Jackson, S.C.; five grandchildren, Christopher Adams of Seattle, Washington, Grace Adams of Key West, Fla., Adam Mullis and Matthew Mullis of Denton, and Heather Hawley of Durham.

A service to celebrate the life of Boyd Adams will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday April 14, 2013, at Carson Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael B. Harrill Jr. and the Rev. Wendy Therrell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hiddenite Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2 to 3 p.m., prior to the service at the church.
