MARSHALL, Ill. — Richard L. Lindley, 81, of Marshall, Ill., passed away at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday April 15, 2008, at his home. He was born July 24, 1926, at West Union, Ill., the son of Okla Lindley and Rachel Williamson Lindley.

He grew up in the West Union area with nine siblings. He joined the U.S. Army on Sept. 14, 1944, and served in the 105th Infantry 27th Division. He was awarded the Bronze Battle Star, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army Occupation Medal of Japan. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 27, 1946. Following his military service, he returned to Clark County and started courting Helen Zimmerly, and in 1949 they were married. Richard’s heart was in farming and he chose that as his occupation after he had worked with his uncle, Randall Lindley, prior to and after his military service.

In 1952 and 1953, he became the father of his sons, James and Scott, who became partners with him in the family farming operation. Richard and Helen retired from the farming operation in 2001 and moved into their home in Golf Lakes Subdivision in Marshall. Helen passed away on Jan. 16, 2007. Richard severely missed her and wanted nothing else but to be with and is now at peace with Helen in their new home. He was active in the Masonic Lodge at Danville, Ill., and reached his 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite Valley in April 1963. He was member of Clark County Post 90 of the American Legion, where he served as commander in 1962.

Surviving are two sons, James A. Lindley and wife Joyce, and Scott E. Lindley and wife Deborah of Marshall, Ill. Richard and Helen became grandparents in the 1970s and 1980s to three grandsons, Brian Lindley, Richard Neil Lindley and wife Jill, and Brandon Lindley. There are two stepgranddaughters, Jessie and Jackie Lindley; stepgrandson, Josh Rue and stepgreat-granddaughter, Jade. Surviving siblings are Carole Angel and husband David of Michigan, Evelyn Wheeler of West York, Ill., Jerry Lindley of Kentucky and Larry L. Lindley and wife Kelly of Marshall, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Lindley, Etta Sue Lindley and Jean Lindley; several nieces and nephews; and Robin Fraker, the mother of his two grandsons, Brian and Neil.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Earis Elizabeth Lindley, Willis G. Lindley, Roy Duane Lindley and Franklin Dee Lindley.

Richard and Helen loved to travel and took trips to Florida, Las Vegas, California, Canada and one of their favorite trips was with Omar and Virginia Shawler to Alaska.

Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday at Pearce Funeral Home of Marshall with the Rev. David Deal officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today and prior to services Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall Cemetery Association.
