Merced Arturo Sandoval, a native and resident of Nambe, passed away peacefully in his sleep.


On 2 Aug 1944, Merced registered for the World War II draft (Army Ser.#38-585-437). He was described as 5' 5", 140 pounds, light brown complexion, brown eyes, and black hair. Next of kin was recorded as his sister Mrs. Gomez of Santa Fe (draft card).


On 13 Nov 1944, Merced was inducted and entered into service with the US Army in Santa Fe. He was described as 5' 6", 130 pounds, brown eyes, brown hair, and a farm hand. On 19 May 1945, he departed for the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and arrived on 18 June 1945. He served as a rifleman with the 8th Calvary Regiment. He participated in the Luzon Campaign. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, Army Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and qualified as an M1 Rifle Marksman. On 6 Sep 1946, he returned to the states and arrived on 22 Sep 1946. On 19 Nov 1946, Merced was honorably discharged as a Private First Class at Camp Beale, California and issued a lapel button (WD AGO Form 53-55). After the Japanese surrender, the 8th Cavalry occupied the 3rd Imperial Guard Regiment Barracks in Tokyo, which provided greater proximity to security missions at the American and Russian Embassies and the Imperial Palace grounds.


Merced retired from Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, CA.


He was preceded in death by his parents Merced and Andreita Sandoval; his wife Elsie Ortiz Sandoval; brothers: Sebastian, Vicente, Garcedan; sisters: Josie Ortiz, Toni Herrera, Chana Gomez; and in-laws Eduardo and Paublita Ortiz.


Merced was survived by daughters: Ymelda Santos (Ray) of Nambe; Joyce Hernandez (Gilbert) of California; Beverly Perez of Albuquerque; son Jess Sandoval (Susan) of California; eight grandchildren: Caroline, Chris, Toby, Nina, Daniel, Bernadette, Martina, Jeremy; thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; sister Juanita Misere; sisters-in-law Juanita Sandoval, Laura McCloud, Anita Ortiz; brother-in-law Clyde Ortiz (wife Maria); and many nieces and nephews and friends.


Pallbearers were: Arnold Garcia, Gabriel Ortiz, Chris Santos, Toby Santos, Juan Hernandez, and Jeremy Perez.
