Sebastian `` Sam'' Sandoval died Friday in St. James Healthcare.

He was born in Santa Fe, N.M., Nov. 14, 1917, to Merced and Andreitta (Archuleta) Sandoval. He was raised and educated in New Mexico. He served in the Army during World War II in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. He fought in the battles and campaigns in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, in which he received several decorations. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 1448.

After his honorable dis charge, he studied in Kansas City, Mo., receiving several certificates including in shoe repair, plumbing and assem bling and repairing guitars. He also was an avid singer and guitar player.

Sam married Mary E. Martinez in New Mexico in 1946, and they came to Butte in 1950. He worked under ground in several area mines until his retirement. Sam herded cattle and sheep for many years and enjoyed working in his garden. His grandchildren were the love of his life, and he spent count less hours playing with them.

Sam is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ernestine Sandoval; his children, Bertha and Harold Horine Jr., James Sandoval and Marcia Ortega, Gloria and Jerry Padilla, all of Butte; grandchildren, Angela and John Montgomery, Merci and Ken Leggitt, Elaine and Doug Fellows, David Sandoval, Tonya and John From and Harold Horine III, all of Butte, Reuben Torres of Great Falls and Rita and Alvin Steiner of Bozeman; 14 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Merced Sandoval, Garcedan and Juanita Sandoval and Juanita and Charlie Misere, all of New Mexico, Feliciana Gomez of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Vincente and Rose Sandoval; and sisters and brother-in-law, Josifita and Manuel Ortiz and Antonia Herrera; and sister-in-law, Elsie Sandoval.

Mr. Sandoval's remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home, where friends may call at 4 p.m. Monday; parish vigil services follow at 7 p.m.

Prayers will be recited at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home, proceeding to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
