Carmelo Fuso was born in Librizzi, Sicilia, Italy. In 1910, he departed from his home for the United States, perhaps after learning from friends that there were good jobs available in the various mills in Massachusetts. He found work at the Barre Wool Combing Company in Barre and sent for his wife and daughter. The family resided in South Barre in the "Italian Section", where they raised their 14 children.

Carmelo registered in the 1918 draft and was naturalized in 1919. The Italian names for the children were all "Americanized" in the 1920s.
