Mr. Phipps, 87, of rural Elgin, died Friday (April 20, 2007) at St. Isidore Health Center of Greenwood Prairie in Plainview.
Born Jan. 28, 1920, in Mentor, Minn., he graduated from St. James (Minn.) High School in 1938. On Nov. 15, 1942, he married Lorinda Schwanke in Willow Creek, Minn. They lived on a dairy farm in Lewisville, Minn., until 1945, when they moved to Elkhorn, Wis., to manage a dairy farm. In 1955, they moved to Elgin and started their own dairy farm.
Mr. Phipps was a 4-H leader in both Walworth County, Wis., and Olmsted County, and served on the AMPI Dairy Board for many years. He was a supervisor on the Viola Township Board for 21 years and served on the Elgin-Millville School Board for 15 years. He was a member of the Holstein Association of America until his retirement in 1981, and was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, where he was chairman several times. In retirement, he drove a school bus and worked at Wescott Orchards in Elgin. In 1988, he and his wife were King and Queen of the Viola Gopher Count.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Garry (Paula) of Oostburg, Wis., Rodney (Cindy) of Omaha, Neb., Keith (Chris) of Hoffman, Minn., David (Sheryl) of Larchwood, Iowa, and Ricky (Rose) of Burlington, Iowa; a daughter, Lori (Scott) Pierce of Decorah, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Molly (Roy) Kuhlman of Winthrop, Minn., Sussie (Willis) Kuhlman of St. James and Gladys (Leslie) Lewis of Lewisville. He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sisters and a grandson.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and an hour before the service Wednesday at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
