Obituary
Funeral services for Donald Lee Andrus will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2018, in the Skip Montet Memorial Chapel of Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home in Opelousas. Reverend Fr. Gary Schexnayder will officiate the services. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Port Barre.
Donald was a native of Opelousas and a longtime resident of Port Barre. He passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Senior Village Nursing Home in Opelousas surrounded by his family at the age of 84.
He was a well-known barber for over 55 years where he owned and operated his shop until his retirement. He cut hair for many years and was always taking care of his customers even by going to the hospitals, nursing homes, and funeral homes.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran who proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post 334 of Port Barre, VFW Post 8678 of Port Barre, and the Reed Davis Memorial Funeral Honor Guard. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Port Barre for many years and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3496 of Port Barre.
Some of his favorite pastime activities are playing his guitar and mandolin, spending time outdoors fishing, doing woodworking, and cooking many meals for his family and friends, especially his popular fish gravy. He was an outstanding gentleman, who was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wally Olivier Andrus of Port Barre; son, Mark Glen Andrus of Port Barre; daughters, Valerie Andrus of Lafayette; and Julie Mliczek and husband, Dion of Lafayette; brother, Curtis J. Andrus and wife, Tomi of Lafayette; six grandchildren, Kala Andrus, Jared Andrus, Seth Andrus, Blair Broussard, Jordan Broussard, and Ty Broussard; and one great-granddaughter, Aubrie Hebert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Andrus, Sr. and Adena "Jenny" Bazar Andrus; brothers, Wilbur Andrus, Willie Andrus, Phillip "Pat" Andrus, Leon Andrus, Walter Andrus, Jr., Jack Andrus, and Floyd Andrus; and sister, Lois Bernard.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 18, 2018, in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas beginning at 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 1:30 p.m. followed by the Veterans Farewell Salute and the Eulogy.
