Mary Ann Turner

Mrs. Mary Ann Turner, 78, of Grace, died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Althara (Amy)Phillips, 418 West Eighteenth Street, following a lingering illness.

She was born November 18, 1859, at Ogden, Utah, and moved to Lago in 1878. She had been active in the L.D.S. Church. Her husband, John R. Turner, died five years ago at Lago.

Besides Mrs. Phillips, surviving are nine sons and daughters, Mrs. Merintha E. Hansen of Salt Lake City, Utah, Richard J. Turner of Idaho Falls, Mrs. Annie M. Thomas and Mrs. Agnes Mendenhall of Grace; George A., Heber, Henry and Roy Turner of Lago, Alma Turner of Declo; a stepson, W. Turner of Grace, and a brother, Heber Butler of Utah.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Lago L.D.S. Church, with Bishop Melvin Michelson Officiating. Interment will be in the Lago Cemetery.

ANNA MAE TURNER THOMAS.

Mary Ann Butler Turner was born 18 November 1858, at Kaysville, Utah, a daughter of William Butler and Ellen Close Butler. She moved with her family to Ogden when she was a child. She married John R. Turner in Salt Lake City 17 March 1876. They lived at Ogden for a time and then went north to Gentile Valley, now called Gem Valley, and filed on a homestead. Mary Ann and John were among the first Mormons to settle in the valley..................
............................................About 1898, Mary Ann took nursing and graduated under Dr. Ellis R. Shipp of Ogden, and Dr. Ellis Kackley of Soda Springs. She helped birth 1,500 babies including many of her own grandchildren. She helped many people during the flu epidemic of 1917 and 1918, traveling miles in her one-horse buggy or her sleigh in the winter time.
